Quite an Appetite for The Hunger Games Trilogy

Well, I’m finally a convert of this madness known as The Hunger Games Trilogy. For those of you who have read it, you know what I mean. For gosh sakes, Katniss Everdeen might be my new role model. And ladies, who doesn’t love Peeta?

For those of you who haven’t read it and, like me, have apparently been living under a rock, you need to dig your way out and get your hands on a copy of the first book, The Hunger Games. I breezed through this one, practically lit a fire through the pages of the sequel Catching Fire, and almost wept when I came to the end of the final book, Mockingjay. And all this in 3 days! Trust me, they are truly amamzing. And, you don’t want to miss out on this since it will hit the big screen in 2011 with two more movies to follow.

Now, the question is, what do I read next?

Recycle Those Old Books

September is all about recycling our old books here at the library. And, to that end we have a few fantastic teen programs coming up that will teach you how to craft some funky new materials out of old books.

Yesterday, some lovely handbags were made out of discarded books… a great gift for the book-nerd in your life, teens. Next week we’re turning kids books into photo frames!

Teens Made a Ton of Waves

Okay, so obviously I’m not very good at keeping up with my blog posts, as per the almost 2 month gap between posts, but let’s forget about that and talk about what an amazing job the teens did this summer!  Over 30,000 minutes were read between June 12th and July 24th, 100 of you participated in the teen programming, and 45 of you volunteered your time to make the children’s programs a success!!  We couldn’t have pulled everything off without your amazing help.  Congratulations to all.  And a special congrats to Beth Eberts, our grand prize winner of a $100 Amazon.com gift card for readign the most number of minutes.

Summer Reading Kickoff

Ahhh… June 12th is approaching fast and furious and so is TSR 2010.  Join us as we make waves at the library with this year’s water-themed reading program.  Teens, all you need to do is register here:”Make Waves for Teens.”  Create a user name and password and log minutes reading each day from June 12th-July 24th.  At the end of the summer you will earn the opportunity to participate in a raffle for a $100.00 Amazon.com gift card.

Teen Summer Reading

April Already!

Alright, once again, programs have taken precedece over blogging and I haven’t check in for quite awhile now. So, let’s talk about some of the great programs coming up at Moon Library. This month you can go around the world with our three-part series for teens and get the chance to eat, learn, and even stretch your imagination with some great crafts. Some Time Has Passed

So I realized that it’s been awhile since I posted a new blog and I just had to rave about the latest book that I read. Authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl did an amazing job with the breakout Beautiful Creatures. A great story that is intelligent, enthralling, and romantic, Beautiful Creatures is the story of lazy Gaitlin County where teenage Ethan Wate makes his home, but when new girl Lena Duchannes moves into town, crazy things start happening and romance starts to blossom. Beautiful and talented Lena is made up of more than the silly giggles, fashion, and flirty attitudes of the all the other girls in the school, but it’s what Lena is made of that might be dangerous for Ethan.

Garcia and Stohl weave together poetic language with history lessons that are actually interesting while giving us a heroine to root for in Lena and a sigh-worthy lead male in the smart and witty Ethan. And word is that Warner Bros. has already optioned this one for the movies… along with the other four books that are coming in the series. So, ladies, if your looking to replace Edward Cullen, the mortal Ethan just might do it for you!

Shiver in the Winter

Looking for a great winter read? Pick up a copy of Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. I read it in one night and absolutely could not put it down. In fact, my dinner got cold because I couldn’t even stop reading it long enough to shove a piece of pizza down! Fans of the werewolf genre will appreciate this one. In fact, Sam, Shiver’s hero, may have stolen my heart away from the vamps. Sorry, Edward… I still love ya!

December YA Book and Contest

With December here already it’s time for a young adult contest here at the library and my pick for a book of the month. The book for this month: Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick’s first novel is a supernatural love story that will have you waiting on the edge of your seat. And, the sequel Crescendo is coming out soon, so you’ve got to check it out. And who knows, hunky fallen angel, Patch, might just overtake everyone’s favorite vamp, Edward Cullen in your heart after you finish it!

Long Time No See

Alright, it’s been awhile since I last posted… as you can see. Let’s see, what’s happened in the past couple of weeks? Well, a new writing group, Write Stuff, for teens has kicked off at the library, the teen reading group has picked up, and we’ve celebrated the release of New Moon. Which, by the way, I drug my husband to see over the weekend and just loved! Much improved over Twilight!

But, moving on from Edward and the gang, check out the new book I am reading titled The Splendor Falls. It’s the story of prima ballerina Sylvie who spends the summer after a leg break that wrecks her dancing career at her ancestrol home in Alabama. While there, Sylvie uncovers ghosts, wrong doings in the small town, and two very handsome, but very different love interests. Slow at first, but I suggest you stick with it.
